Well, our beloved Penelope did not win the coveted Oscar we all wished for her, but the talent of other Spaniards was recognized at the 79th Academy Awards ceremony.

The movie Pan’s Labyrinth did not win an award either but Guillermo del Toro, the talented creator was very emotional as he watched David Martí and Montse Ribé receive the Best Makeup Oscar as well as Pilar Revuelta and Eugenio Caballero win for the Best Art Direction .

The film which was produced in Spain by Madrid-based Estudios Picasso, and the collaboration of private broadcaster Telecinco is a success in the Spaniards eyes as I’m sure the rest of the world.

Located in a typical Menorcan village of Menorca Sa Pedrera d’es Pujol is a very romantic restaurant with its outside garden where the bougainvilleas, lawn, aromatic plants, jasmine and soft music will make you fall in love if you are not already. The chef, Daniel González Mora, whose mother is from Menorca and whose father from Asturias, grew up between these two different lands steeping himself in both cuisines.

Specialty dishes are the “Beef Wellington with gravi sauce” and the “Slowly oven-cooked Menorcan lamb with potatoes”. For dessert you need to try the “Apple pie cooked with Calvados sauce and ice cream”. The food together with the large variety wine selection, the ambiance and the great hospitality of the entire staff will satisfy you r every desire.

Terra Mitica Theme Park in Benidorm a wild time

Yes, Spain has beaches, monuments, castles, museums, good food, great wine and it also has great theme parks. One of my favorites is Terra Mitica located in warm and sunny Benidorm. This Themed park offers great thrilling rides for old and young alike. The park is divided into several themed areas such as Rome, Iberia, Egypt, Greece and the Islands.

With more than 50 daily shows this is an entertaining place. The rides are one of a kind and the entire family could enjoy every part of this park. Located in Benidorm, you are right in the center of one of the best beach towns around where day time as well as night time offers you a variety of events.

Ciudad de la Luz, Movie Studios in Alicante

Posted by julia on 23 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: Spain

Spain can now say they are in the movie business with Ciudad de la Luz Movie Studios located in Alicante. It is one of the most exciting projects being offered by the Valencian Community. The approximately 740 acres of lot designed by Gary Bastian, is said to become the most complete movie and television complex in Europe.

The studio is projected to be complete by the fall of 2007 but is in full working conditions at the moment with all state of the art equipment. Productions Aguamarga, other than overseeing the completions of future phases and running the operations of the complex, is determined to provide a complete production support mechanism, including Government alliances, to welcome world wide productions.

The las movie to shoot here is the movie Asterix and the Olympic Games starring Gerard Depardieu. Other productions last year have been the Ray Loriga’s Teresa, Muerte y Vida, Antonio Bandera’s El Camino de los Ingleses and Menno Meyjes’ Manolete among others. This year with the complex continuing to develop, we can expect more and more Hollywood types to start arriving and enjoying the amazing facilities.

Make your own Sangria

Posted by julia on 22 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: Delicatessen, wine

Sangria, what can be said that has not been said before about this awesome typical Spanish drink. My favorite summer treat, a nice refreshing glass of sangria. Sitting down in an outdoor bar with friends and sipping a glass of sangria is probably one of the most enjoyable things one can do in Spain or anywhere else.. but in Spain it is a lot more fun.

How do you make sangria you many ask? There are many different ways you can make this treat. You just need the basic ingredients: wine and fruit the other compliments vary with each recepie. My fathers recepie is one of my favorites and it contains, red wine (a cheap bottle), a shot of , Cognac, sprite, orange juice and cut up fruit of your choice. In the beginning you will need to experiment until you get the right taste (its fun trying your mixtures until you get it right).

You can always just run to your nearest bar in Spain and order a glass or jar full of this red delicacy.

Best cheese in Spain

Posted by julia on 22 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: Delicatessen

I think everyone knows that one of the best cheese in the world comes from Spain. With so many different varieties this country has a diverse range of culinary styles that come in a variety of rich and complex flavors.

Manchego is probably the most well known outside Spain. Sheep and Goat cheeses are both common, the latter in Andalucia. Mixed milk cheeses are also very common. There are light cheeses which are are not generally transformed or fermented except for the lactic fermentation, medium flavor cheeses are usually semi-cured and go well with young red wines and Strong flavored cheeses with the longest curing process go well with red wines with body.

Whether you are a cheese lover or not, once you try Spanish cheese you will taste a difference and you will want more and more. Cheese and wine are one of the great pleasures of Spain.
