Not sure how this ritual came to be many suggest it started back in the 40´s when an annual parade of Gigantes and Cabezudos (enormous figures with big heads) were passing through the street and several kids knocked them over making the parade participants very upset and violent to which the kids responded by throwing tomatoes at them, the next year the kids returned with their own tomatoes to start the fight again, police tried to stop them but from that day on this tomato fight has been unstoppable and now thousands of tourist attend this yearly festival to join in the fun.

I love to go there and see the murals of so long a go, there is so much history here. 1,117 meters above sea level, it is the highest capital of Spain. The city is surrounded by ancient city walls that still hold the test of time. A quiet town, not too many people add to their atenirany but should.

If you decide to visit this city in the end of June, you will be able to enjoy the “Avila en Tapas” celebration which will be held from the 28 th of June through the 1st of July with the colaboration of 41 restaurants that will show off their best miniture tapas.

Easter week or as it is referred to here in Spain Holy Week, is one of the most cultural holidays in this part of the world. This is a week where all over Spain you can see street processions which are organized in different towns on every evening starting on Palm Sunday and ending with Easter Sunday.

The processions are very elaborate with people carrying statues and saints around on floats of wooden platforms, dressed in the typical traditional gear which can be a little scary to some foreigners since the gowns worn by the men resemble those of the KKK. Watching these processions you can feel the energy of the people and the intensity of the catholic beliefs.

The most famous Easter celebrations are held in the south of Spain in cities such as Valladolid, Toledo, Segovia, Burgos, Zamora and Cuenca. April to me is one of the best times to come to Spain, not only for Holy Week but for the incredible weather throughout the country.
