CruzCampo, the Spanish beer

Posted by julia on 19 Sep 2007 | Tagged as: Fiesta!

cruzcampo.jpg

Ok, so Spain is known more for its wine, beaches and monuments but they also have beer. Cruz Campo is one of the most popular here in Spain. One of their sayings is “its color dazzles. Its flavor refreshing, it invites you to repeat. But the best of everything is when you share a beer with your friends. That is when the best part of the day arrives”.

Pretty much sums up the drinking sport here in Spain… try it if you can.

arrozconleche.jpg
I can’t believe I didn’t share with you the Arroz con Leche recipe, its one of my favorites, enjoy!
Basic ingredients

  • 200g short-grained pudding rice
  • 300g sugar
  • 1 litre milk
  • 50g sultanas
  • 3 tbsp brandy
  • 1 stick of cinnamon
  • a few tspn cinnamon powder

Steps:

1. Put the sultanas in a bowl and cover with the brandy

2. Place the rice (without rinsing), the sugar and the milk in a pan with a strong base over a medium heat - add the few drops of vanilla and the stick of cinnamon

3. When the milk starts to boil turn the heat to minimum and continue to cook slowly stirring occasionally to prevent the rice sticking to the bottom of the pan

4. Once the sultanas have soaked up the brandy add to the pan of rice and milk

5. Once the rice has cooked remove the pan from the heat - remove the cinnamon stick

6. Place in individual serving dishes and leave to cool - before serving cover with a little cinnamon powder

Do you speak Spanish?

Posted by julia on 10 Sep 2007 | Tagged as: spanish lessons

doyouspeakspanish.jpg

That is the question two journalists from BBC´s Mundo Spanish News Service took on as they set off to the U.S to find out who spoke Spanish. Their trip took them through most states with their camera on hand and started to ask people if they spoke Spanish.

Oddly enough some people whose looks were very much Spanish and had Spanish names had no idea how to speak the language. They found some cities were more bilingual than others but overall, the point here is that you never know who speaks a second language.

If you were stopped on the street and asked “Do you speak Spanish?” What would your answer be?

Txacoli, have you tried it?

Posted by Ferran on 07 Sep 2007 | Tagged as: wine

txacoli.jpg

If you don’t know what Txacoli is don’t worry, until a few months a go I also had no clue but thanks to some connoisseur friends I have been introduced to this fantastic drink. Txacoli is a type of sparkling white wine the proceeds from the Basque region. It is poured like sidra but has a much tastier and refreshing taste (in my opinion).

If you live in the United States you can now find three denominations of this wine from the Vizcaya, Gipúzcoa and the Alava regions. Most trendy restaurants especially in New York and San Francisco have caught on to this new craze and are going wild for this tasty treat.

If you haven’t tried it don’t be afraid of the name pronounced (chacoli), it is worth any embarrassment you may endure while trying to order it..

The perfect Spanish dish

Posted by Ferran on 05 Sep 2007 | Tagged as: Delicatessen, Recipes

jamonibericoconhuevos.jpg

I see that one of my favourite bloggers also enjoys good traditional Spanish dishes. Jamon Serrano, fried eggs and french fries, you really can’t ask for anything else. This is a dish that always makes me feel good. With a good piece of home made bread to dip in the sauce of the egg, a glass of red wine and you are just in heaven..At least my kind of heaven.

If you can’t find Jamon Serrano where you are try latienda.com they will deliver to you where ever you are so you can start enjoying the Spanish way of eating..

Siesta Life in Spain

Posted by julia on 31 Aug 2007 | Tagged as: hotels, restaurants

siesta.jpg

Where else in the world can you go to a restaurant have a couple of tapas then go off to a cozy room to take a siesta, I’ll tell you where, of course in Spain. Although the Spanish government has tried to abolish the siesta on several occasions, the Spanish are not letting go of this long earned tradition any time soon.

Well, it seems many hotel and restaurant owners have teamed up to offer special siesta packages which they have named “Iberian yoga”. Hotels such as Las Casas del Rey de Baeza in Seville offer exclusive deals so you can enjoy a great meal then relax for a couple of hours afterward then go on your marry way, no questions asked.

I love this country. Everyday I find more and more things that just make me say “Viva España”.

La Tomatina in Buñol

Posted by julia on 29 Aug 2007 | Tagged as: festivals

tomatina.jpg

More than 40,000 persons will participate today August 29th in one of the most anticipated festivals of the year in Buñol, Spain called the Tomatina. This event consist of well, a bunch of tomatoes (about 117 tons of tomatoes trucked in from Navarra) then as you can see by the pciture, a food fight is created.

Not sure how this ritual came to be many suggest it started back in the 40´s when an annual parade of Gigantes and Cabezudos (enormous figures with big heads) were passing through the street and several kids knocked them over making the parade participants very upset and violent to which the kids responded by throwing tomatoes at them, the next year the kids returned with their own tomatoes to start the fight again, police tried to stop them but from that day on this tomato fight has been unstoppable and now thousands of tourist attend this yearly festival to join in the fun.
